WEDDING MAKEUP ARTIST INTERVIEW | LYNCHBURG, VIRGINIA | PART TWO

Last week we had the pleasure of featuring one of our fellow wedding vendors, makeup artist, Ashley Ancheta. Today we are continuing with part two of this interview. If you are in need of a Lynchburg based makeup artist for your wedding, give Ashley a call. You won’t regret it!

Do you encourage trial runs before the wedding? If so, what do they entail?

I absolutely encourage trial runs for weddings. Plan ahead and call at least 3 months in advance. That will give you time to do a trial run and make your decision. If you decide to find another artist, hopefully you’ll find one that you like and will be available. Trial runs are important for both brides and the artist. They give the bride the opportunity to find an artist that understands their needs, vision, and one who has a compatible personality. During the trial run, I like to sit down with the bride first and talk about what they are looking for, how they normally do their makeup, if they have any allergies, when they need to be ready, how many people in their party request makeup, and details of their special day. Then, we proceed with the actual makeup application. This entire process takes me an hour.

How much time should brides allow in their wedding day timeline for makeup?

Brides should put aside an hour for their makeup the day of their wedding. This will allow time for any last minute requests from the bride. Also, it allows time for interruption during the service. Every single time I’m with a bride, several people will come to talk to her about what needs to be done or just to say “hello”. Try to make these moments sweet and short so you can sit back and breathe for an hour. I 100% understand that there are a million things going through your head as you go through that last minute check list. By all means, if it is an urgent matter, please address it. However, you also want to make sure you do not fiddle with your timeline too much. We both have things to do that day, so let’s try and stick with the program as much as we can.

What is your advice for the brides that choose to do their own wedding makeup?

DO NOT do your own makeup on your wedding day. I’m a makeup artist and didn’t do my own makeup on my wedding day. You want to make this as low stress as possible. Like I said before, this is your time to sit back and breathe for an hour. Take advantage of it. Also, you are in charge of your makeup every other day. You want to look like yourself, but you also want to enhance what you would normally do. A good artist will have a fresh, new perspective, and will be able to create this look for you effortlessly.

Do you have a favorite makeup technique? If so, what is it?

My technique depends on the job. When it comes to weddings, my main objective is to make the bride look like the best version of herself. Brides want to be naturally beautiful and timeless. They envision walking down the aisle and seeing their husband-to-be with wide eyes gazing at their glowing perfection and thinking “I am the luckiest guy on earth”. It’s my job to enhance their beauty.

If you could offer a bride looking for a makeup artist one piece of advice, what would it be?

Find a makeup artist that listens to you. Your wedding day is a monumental moment in your life. I’m sure you have a vision of what you want it to look like. Be honest with your artist about that vision. If that person does something that you would like done differently, tell them. This day is about you and your husband, not your artist’s ego.
