Ready to start planning your big day? Here are a few rules to consider:
RULE #1: Assign duties. This is huge! Don’t do everything yourself. Let your family and friends help. As a photographer, I find it really helpful to have a go-to-person on the wedding day. If I have to shoot the wedding ring and bands for instance, the last thing I want to do is go ask the bride or groom for them. I want my couples to ENJOY their day, and I do everything I can to make this possible. Assign duties and don’t worry about a thing, just relax. Keep things organized to make sure your big day runs flawlessly.
RULE #2: Don’t do your own hair and makeup on your wedding day. Your hair and makeup are two of the most important elements of your wedding day. Hire a professional to enhance your natural beauty. You deserve to be pampered on the most important day of your life! A professional makeup artist will use top brand products that will ensure your makeup stays fresh throughout the entire day. A hair stylist will make sure that your hair compliments your makeup and your curls will stay in place even after you dance your feet off.
RULE #3: Always do a trial run before your wedding. Make sure that the hair style you choose for your wedding (whether it be curls, braids or updos), fits your style and personality. Try different hairstyles and choose what you like best. If you can’t decide between two types of hair styles and/or makeup, trial runs will help you get a better idea of what you want to look like on your wedding day.
BONUS TIP: Schedule your engagement/bridal pictures on the same day as you hair and makeup trial runs.
RULE #4: Wear comfortable shoes. If you don’t regularly wear high heels, don’t try learning how to walk in them on your wedding day. If you are used to wearing high heels, you might want to consider high heel protectors. These will prevent your heels from sinking into grass and protect them from getting muddy.
BONUS TIP: Bring flats to wear at the reception.
RULE #5: Keep calm and enjoy your wedding. This is your day, enjoy it to its fullest! Relax and calm your nerves. You are about to walk down the aisle and marry your best friend. This is the day you’ve dreamed of your whole life so don’t let anything steal your joy.

Thank you, Nick!
I definitely needed to read this before my wedding last month!!! Lovely advice and it’s all so true!
Thank you, Tosha and congrats on your wedding!
Perfect advice! Bringing flats for the reception is such a great idea!
Most of my brides do that now and I couldn’t be happier that they choose to be comfortable on their wedding day.
Delegating tasks is SO important! Glad you brought that up.
I agree, Cynthi. It makes things so much easier.
I agree with all the rules, except for number 2. We had a very small wedding, just immediate family (which was still stressful enough), I’m sorry I’m cheap and did not want to fork over the minimum $50 for the make-up consultation and I did not want too much make-up on, so I did it myself. I mean who better to know what I like in that aspect than me, seeing as how I do it myself everyday. But I do agree about the hair that I refused to do myself.
Thank you for sharing your thoughts, Amanda. I am sure that many brides feel the same way. However, our everyday makeup might not necessarily enhance our natural beauty as we apply it in a way WE believe it looks good. A professional makeup artist will be able to tell you what kind of makeup best compliments your facial features and how to apply it the right way.
On the other hand, I wouldn’t want to mess with my hair on my wedding day either. Haha.
Yup, I’d agree with every one! Great list!
Thank you, Charlene.
Great advice that brides need.
Glad you found it helpful, Karissa.
These are such great tips! Especially the engagement photos on the same day as your hair and makeup trials! Genius!
I think that is an important one as well. Thanks, Chantal.
We skipped the hair/makeup practice (and engagement photos…great tip to combine them though!!) I wholeheartedly agree with the rest of the list!
Thank you!
Awesome tips for brides to be! I agree with every one! Love the idea of engagement session done on the trial day of hair & makeup!
That can be a real time saver. Thank you for sharing your thoughts, Carmen!
