3 Easy Ways You Can Create Styling Boards for Photographers

In this post I’m going to teach you 3 easy ways you can create your own styling boards today! Are you dreaming of beautiful detail shots but don’t have an amazing styling board to use?! That’s alright, because today I’ll teach you how to make your own.

Here are three easy ways you can create a gorgeous styling board!

1. The linen styling board

For this particular board, you are going to need:

  • a 24×30 poster board or canvas
  • one yard of linen in the color of your choice
  • hot glue gun or nail gun

The first thing you’ll want to do is cut your linen to size. I suggest leaving at least 2 inches of fabric on each side of the board or canvas. Make sure to iron the linen in order to remove any wrinkles from the fabric. Lastly, you’ll want to secure the linen to the back of your board by using either a hot glue gun or a nail gun.

Con: the linen may be hard to clean if it gets dirty.

2. The textured styling board

Supplies needed:

  • a 24×30 poster board or canvas
  • pre-mixed drywall compound
  • acrylic craft paint

This type of board is perfect if you’re looking to add more depth and dimension to your detail shots. All you have to do is add some plaster to your board and use a butter knife or spatula to smooth it out until you cover the whole surface with plaster. Keep doing it until you create a texture you’re happy with. When you’re ready, let the board dry for about 20 hours before you start painting it.

Con: the plaster may chip down the road.

3. The painted canvas

For this board, you’ll need:

  • a 24×30 poster board or canvas
  • acrylic craft paint

This was my favorite board to make and it photographs extremely well. In order to get a watercolor effect, make sure your brush is extra wet. Then, cover the entire board with paint until you’re happy with the results. Let the paint dry before you start using the board.

Bonus: The marble texture board

Amazon has a great self-adhesive marble film that you can stick to any surface in order to create a lifestyle styling board.
